Naming & renaming
Companies rarely outgrow their name overnight. Usually, a business spends years modernising its technology, expanding into new markets or moving upmarket, until the original name starts holding sales back.
Approach
A name is a strategic decision that belongs inside the brand strategy phase, right after we audit your current brand equity and define your market position. Sometimes the smartest move is evolving what you already have, just as we turned VAF Přerov, a regional workshop name tied to one Czech town, into VAF Tech. Other times, a new product line or spin-off calls for a completely new name from the ground up.
When we develop a new name or rename an established company, every candidate is tested against your positioning, tone of voice and category habits. I check linguistic connotations across target languages, domain availability and initial trademark databases, so the name we choose is ready for your trademark attorney and built to last.
What’s included
Evaluating whether your current name still carries commercial value worth keeping, needs a strategic evolution, or requires a clean break.
Setting clear rules before brainstorming begins: what the name must signal, how it should sound, and which industry clichés to avoid.
Developing focused, well-argued name directions and checking pronunciation, meaning and associations across target markets.
Checking domain availability and existing trademark databases before handing the shortlisted names over to a trademark attorney.

I only take on naming as part of a broader brand strategy starting with our initial brand audit. Without knowing your positioning, competitors and customers, choosing a name becomes guesswork.
We look closely at which part of your existing name carries real recognition and whether an evolutionary step makes sense. We then plan the transition in your launch rollout so long-standing clients understand the continuity behind the change.
I run initial screenings in trademark databases and domain registries so we do not pursue a name that is obviously taken. The final legal search and registration is always done with a trademark attorney.
